Why do we called chinese people "Teng Lang"

you are spot on, its hokkien slang for chinese. The hokkien slang for China was '唐山‘ or 'Teng Sua'.

Nowadays we just call the mainland chinese men 'Ah tiong' 阿中, women 'Ah tiong bu' 阿中母 and china 'tong kok' 中国

You are right, to add on why majority of Chinese in South East Asia is call "Teng Lang" (唐人in hokkien) its because after the fall of Tang dynasty many of the Tang people escaped to the south of China, mainly Fujian & Guang Zhou. As most of our ancestor came from south China which they still identify themselves as 唐人, they brought over the name when they were sold as 'piglet' or coolies to all over the world during the 19th century. There is why ChinaTown all over the world are call 唐人街 instead of 汉人街. Do you also know that Hokkien was an imperial language during the Tang dynasty?
The majority of us are actually 汉人 but we still call ourselves 'Tang' to honour the greatest Dynasty in China history.

Not expert but Cantonese also refer to each other as 唐人. I recall it was because most of Cantonese/Hokkien knew and greatly honour the Tang dynasty.
Folks told me most common language used in Tang dynasty was Cantonese, even the Tang Shi (Tang Poems) sound much better if pronounced in Cantonese.

Generally, northern Chinese call themselves Han people and southern Chinese call themselves Tang people. The Chinese diaspora overseas are mostly from southern China. That's why Chinatowns are usually called Tang people streets in Chinese. The dialect pronunciation differs of course but meaning same thing, e.g. Tong Yan (Cantonese) and Tng Lang (Hokkien) also mean the same Tang people. Foreigners call us all Chinese meaning Chin people, i.e. from Qin Dynasty because they count from the unification of Chinese empire. But I don't think most Chinese want to be too much associated with Emperor Qin Shihuang tyranny LOL

Sidetrack a little. Taling about Lang, Singaporeans also known as "Sin Ka Po Lang". literally means Singapore people. Remember my early days, SG people like to call Malaysians "Chiew Hu Kia", literally means Malaysian Kid. On one occasion, one SG supervisor shouted at the Malaysia workers, using "Chiew Hu Kia". One Malaysian damm Tulan responded. "KNN, only you Sin Ka Por Lang is "Lang" (people), other people (Pa Lang) is Kia (Kid). This is true till today, China (Tiong Kok Kia), Thai (Siam Kia), Pinoy (Fi Li Pin Kia), Vietnamese (Wat Nam Kia), Malaysians (Chiew Hu Kia) and Taiwanese (Tai Wan Kia) and most Indians, (Ke Ling Kia)

Somehow, Hongkies were spared, also called people (Hiong Kong Lang).

Consolation who those who are called "Kia", meaning kids. At least, it's not monkey (Gow) or Ghost (Gui). Somehow, Sin Ka Por Kia doesn't rhyme well.

Before that, Chinese is called "Han" people because of the Han Dynasty.
