Who is Kym Ng marrying?
by Kwok Kar Peng

KYM Ng is finally marrying her boyfriend at the end of the year.

That they’ve dated and waited for an astonishing 15 years before getting hitched isn’t the only surprise.

The bigger surprise is perhaps how her fiancé, known only as Mr Yang, has managed to keep such a low profile all these years, so much so that some people have mused in jest if he actually exists.

His name and occupation are still a secret to most, and so far, no photo of the couple has ever been leaked to the public.

The lovebirds intend to register their marriage overseas, and their wedding tea ceremony and dinner will also be a hush-hush event open only to a few family members.

Kym’s not even planning to wear a wedding dress.

But the popular TV host and actress, who never reveals her age, insisted that she has never kept Mr Yang hidden.

She told The New Paper: “I’m an anti-social person and goes home right after work, but we still go out to catch movies, for shopping and meals.

“I also introduced him to friends when we bumped into them on the streets. I’m not keeping him under wraps, I just don’t bring himinto the limelight.”

Kym added that the public has also been very kind and respectful for leaving her and her fiancé alone.

Mr Yang is also not keen on having media attention on him and thus steers clear of media events like movie gala premieres.

Kym explained: “He thinks it’s more peaceful and convenient for him that way. He’s after all not an artiste and doesn’t want the public to be staring and pointing at him as Kym Ng’s boyfriend. I think it’s a very clever choice he made.”

As private as they are, Kym, however, revealed some details of Mr Yang to The New Paper late last year.

She said her fiancé is a Chinese Singaporean a few years older than her, 1.75cm tall, manly and the sporty sort who likes outdoors activities like scuba-diving and mountain-climbing.

He’s also a romantic, she said, who once left about eight love notes in her make-up pouch and luggage when she went to China for work.

But what doeshe look like?

Both Alan Tern and Zheng Geping, Kym’s co-stars in Reunion Dinner and Table of Glory, said they have never seen him.

A former MediaWorks employee, who declined to be named, echoed the same thing, despite having worked with Kym for more than two years.

Even Kym’s closest friends in the industry, Bryan Wong and Guo Liang, claimed they have never seen him.

They, however, provided an inkling of how Mr Yang could look like.

Bryan said that he “sort of” saw Mr Yang once more than 10 years ago when the latter came to fetch Kym home.

The TV host and actor claimed he only had the briefest glance at him and couldn’t see how he looks like. Bryan added: “Years ago, some of us tried to be kaypoh (nosy) and guess how he looks like. Kym stamped her feet and drew the line there. She separates her work and privacy very clearly.

“It’s quite ironic how we celebs talk about having no privacy but there we were, trying to pry into our friend’s privacy.”

The only description Kym has ever offered of Mr Yang, Bryan claimed, is that he looks like acclaimed Hong Kong actor Lau Ching Wan.

Tall, dark & humorous

Guo Liang, too, had the actor’s face in his mind when we asked him what Mr Yang looks like.

He told me: “I’ve heard that he looks like Ching Wan. Kym talks about her fiancé often when we have meals. She says he’s very humorous, tall, big-sized and dark.”

Celebrity hair stylist David Gan told The New Paper that he saw Mr Yang from the back once about four years ago.

But when we spoke to Kym later, she said that she had introduced her fiancé to both Bryan and former TV host Sharon Au.

“Friends like Bryan understand how private we are and I believe he wanted to protect me when he said he hasn’t met my fiancé before,” Kym explained.

Meanwhile, idle gossip about her inventing her boyfriend up have not dampened her spirits one bit.

She said : “That’s okay, better still if you think I don’t have a boyfriend. Then I’ll always be single!

“I don’t need to prove anything. I don’t need to drag my boyfriend out to show the public or present proof that I’ve married.”

Why this obsession with so-called celebrities' wedding, bf gf and ad nauseam? Who cares? We should be obsessed with eking out a livelihood in our harsh environment called Sinkapore. Or are we waiting for them to fall from grace and set the gossip mills on fire?

Imho, celebrities should not expect the same level of privacy as the average Joe/Jane in the street just as monks should live the simple life, not the high life.

After dating for over a decade and decide to get married when she is already past 40 years old? Doesn't make sense to me

Marry this type (based on her TV personality) sure jialat one. Kenna nag non-stop.....just look at her photo by thread starter. Focus on her eyes. I will not touch her with a ten foot pole. Not to my taste at all

Many PRCs mei meis, even at Cat 80 still much prettier.
