Whistleblower Protection Bill SOP to be launched soon
THE Whistleblower Protection Bill, passed in April, will come into force next month when its standard operating procedure (SOP) is launched. Datuk Hisham Nordin, the director of the NKRA monitoring and coordination unit for corruption, said the new Act would empower both government departments and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to look into complaints and protect informants.
"The SOP is scheduled to be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in December. "Since the Bill was passed, the Government has been looking into the best practices from various sources as well as receiving feedback from departments on the implementation," Hisham said.
He said the biggest worry people have about reporting corruption and wrongdoings was that action would be taken on them or they will be put in ‘cold storage'. "With the Whistleblower Act in full force, we believe more people will have the confidence of coming forward as they know they will be protected (from any backlash)," Hisham said.
