SMRT trains were refurbished 10 to 20 years ago. That's when many seats were removed to create more standing space, because Population White Paper and the island was turning into an overcrowded shithole.

In UK, they were using pre WWII underground trains until recently or about 15 years or so ago when it was upgraded. The train floors and escalators were wooden.
