Men and women in Singapore want to have more and better sex, according to a survey.
Commissioned by drug company Pfizer, the Ideal Sex in Asia survey showed men here believe the "ideal" frequency of sexual intercourse is 8.7 times a month, while the women felt it was 7.3 times a month.
In real life, men and women engaged in intercourse an average of 5.2 and 5.5 times, respectively, each month.
The survey, conducted from October 2010 to January 2011, also revealed people in Singapore were strongly interested in improving their level of sexual satisfaction.
About half the men and women interviewed were very or extremely interested in having better sex. An ideal sexual experience is one that has a good level of intimacy, such as an emotional connection, the survey found.
More men in the 51-74 age range were interested in improving their experience in the bedroom than those aged 31-40, while, among women, interest in having a better experience began to decline after age 50.
Nearly half of the men and women surveyed said they were "extremely" or "very likely" to take steps to improve their sexual experience. This includes a mix of emotional and medical elements.
Professor Peter Lim, a senior urologist at Gleneagles Hospital and President of the Society for Men's Health (Singapore), said, "Sex is no longer a taboo topic in Asia; rather it has an impact on the overall health for both men and women."
"A strong emotional connection between couples, as well as a psychologically-balanced life outside of a relationship, can help a man's self confidence in the bedroom," he said.
Survey findings showed that the two most common factors for an ideal sexual experience for men and women are foreplay and emotional connection.
Erection-related factors also have a strong association with ideal sex. More than eight out of 10 men and women rank erection hardness, or the ability to maintain an erection, as either the most or second-most important element necessary for achieving an ideal sexual experience.
The Ideal Sex in Asia survey interviewed 3,282 respondents online in 10 countries, including China, Hong kong, India and Malaysia. In Singapore, 301 respondents aged 31 to 74 years were interviewed.
