My namesake Eugene Wee wrote an interesting article in The New Paper today describing faceless online critics like me as “bacteria” in a snide reference to the “online flaming brigade”’s lynching of Tan Yong Soon and Charles Chong in the past 2 weeks. (read article here)
He made an arbitrary classification of online critics into two groups: those who dare to show their faces and stand up for what they believe and faceless critics like me who hide behind the PC screen to rant and rave.
Eugene next went go to disparage the latter group for lacking credibility whose opinions matter less as compared to critics who are known in real life.
I would like to thank my “twin brother” from the mainstream media for acknowledging the rising influence of wayangparty.com in Singapore’s blogosphere:
“Blogs like yawningbread.org, wayangparty.com and theonlinecitizen.com have names to them. And Messrs Alex Au, Eugene Yeo and Choo Zheng Xi have earned themselves a growing number of readers.”
Unfortunately, Eugene Yeo is not in the same category as Alex Au and Choo Zheng Xi. Like my fellow comrades from the “online flaming brigade”, nobody knows my identity in real life and hence I dare not accept the “honor” of being mentioned in the same breadth as Alex and Zheng Xi who have to be extra cautious in what they wrote online because they are known to the “Big Brother”.
