In the 2011 general election, Ong contested in Aljunied GRC led by George Yeo, a disgraced Catholic who promoted gambling with 2 casinos. He lost to the Workers' Party team led by Low Thia Khiang.
This was the first time in Singapore's history when the PAP lost a GRC in an election.
In the 2015 he sneaked in Sembawang GRC, which was considered 'safer' for him, and the PAP team won with 72% of the vote.
In 2015, Ong was appointed Senior Minister of State for Defence. On 1 November 2016, he was promoted to Second Minister for Defence while concurrently holding the portfolio of MOE alongside Ng Chee Meng who lost in Sengkang GRC and subsequently went into food business at NTUC
