In the 2011 general election, Ong contested in Aljunied GRC led by George Yeo, a disgraced Catholic who promoted gambling with 2 casinos. He lost to the Workers' Party team led by Low Thia Khiang.
This was the first time in Singapore's history when the PAP lost a GRC in an election.
In the 2015 he sneaked in Sembawang GRC, which was considered 'safer' for him, and the PAP team won with 72% of the vote.
In 2015, Ong was appointed Senior Minister of State for Defence. On 1 November 2016, he was promoted to Second Minister for Defence while concurrently holding the portfolio of MOE alongside Ng Chee Meng who lost in Sengkang GRC and subsequently went into food business at NTUC

The real question is why despite OYK's favored status and clear preference by LHL did he still end up losing to LW? This can possibly be due to:
1) OYK isn't that good in navigating internal party politics and was never able to garner the necessary support despite the best "campaigning" from LHL.
2) OYK performed poorly in the MMTF especially when compared side by side with LW.
3) CCS put up a much tougher fight despite being sidelined by LHL in order to clear the obstacles for OYK.
4) As the party is not able to rally around one strong candidate, all camps have to compromise on a 2nd choice that is at least tolerable.
5) LW, Mr Nice Guy, top notch project coordinator able to traverse between the different camps emerges as the only palatable choice.
Actually the result of a dark horse that is bland in character, uncontroversial and without strong factional backing eventually getting the top job is very common in mature politics. We see that often even in Malaysia and Indonesia politics. Lots of examples in Europe as well. The most prominent one is of course Joe Biden. Everyone knows he's not the best man for the job and the Democratic Party is not short of better people, but Joe happens to be the only one that everyone can tolerate.

OYK lost his chance when he lost the SMC election. CCS was all clear until he kenna sabotage by his own people with the secret recording. From there, many ideas was floated (including 1st female PM) but LW being HSK mentee became an option. Feedback was positive after mainstream media test water so that brought us to where we are today.
