The entire police force of a Mexican town has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder of a candidate for mayor.
Twenty-eight police officers from the town of Ocampo were detained by the police’s internal affairs department.
State authorities issued a statement saying the probe focused on potential violations of the police code of conduct, without giving more details.

However, local media said the officers were held on suspicion of being complicit in the killing of Fernando Angeles Juarez, who was running for mayor of Ocampo.
Mr Juarez, the mayoral candidate for the leftist Democratic Revolution Party, was shot dead on Thursday.
His party issued a statement saying he had been assassinated and called on the government to provide protection for those running in the 1 July elections.
After he was killed, Ocampo’s public security secretary, Oscar Gonzalez Garcia, was accused of involvement, the BBC reported.

Mexican federal agents were prevented from arresting him on Saturday by local police officers.
On Sunday, they returned with reinforcements and arrested the town’s entire police force.
Mexico will vote for a new president on 1 July, alongside hundreds of other federal, state and municipal posts.

This year’s election has been the bloodiest in Mexico’s modern history.
Dozens of politicians, candidates and activists have been murdered by criminal groups and gangsters seeking to influence the shape of the post-electoral map.
Almost all of the 18 candidates killed across the country so far have been running for local posts.
Other politicians who were considering running have been killed before they could even register as candidates.

A Mexican town’s entire police force has been detained after a mayoral candidate was shot dead this week.
Federal police detained 28 local officers and the local public security secretary early on Sunday morning in Ocampo, a town of 24,000 people in northwest Mexico.
Fernando Ángeles Juárez, 64, was shot dead on Thursday outside one of his properties. More than 100 politicians have been killed across the country in the lead up to general elections on July 1.
According to local media reports, federal police arrived on Saturday to arrest Oscar González García, the public security secretary, but were stopped by local police.

'He couldn't stand corruption'
Mr Ángeles was a successful businessman with little previous political experience.
He had considered standing as an independent but eventually joined one of Mexico's main parties, the centre-left Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).
"He couldn't stand seeing so much poverty, inequality and corruption and so he decided to run," one of his closest friends, Miguel Malagón, told El Universal newspaper.
When Mexican federal agents arrived in the town on Saturday to detain him, they were stopped by local police officers.
They returned with reinforcements on Sunday morning and arrested the entire force and their boss.
They were handcuffed and taken for questioning in the state capital, Morelia.
Prosecutors accuse the officers and Mr González of links with organised crime groups in the state.
Mexicans will go to the polls next Sunday to choose a new president, senators and members of the Chamber of Deputies.
More than 3,000 posts at regional and local levels will also be at stake.

The entire police force of a Mexican town has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder of a local mayoral candidate.
Fernando Angeles Juarez, 64, was shot dead on Thursday. He was running as the candidate for the centre-left Party of the Democratic Revolution in Ocampo, Michoacan, which has a population of 24,000.
All 28 police officers from the town were arrested after the killing, a state source familiar with the investigation told the Reuters news agency .

A statement from state authorities on Sunday said that the officers were being questioned by police internal affairs official. The statement did got give further details beyond stating that the investigation was focusing on violations of the police’s code of conduct.
Silvano Aureoles, the governor of the state, instructed the attorney general to begin investigating the death, he tweeted on June 21.
The arrested officers will appear before the Internal and Legal Affairs Commission of the Deputy Office of Public Security, according to Mexican newspaper El Universal.
Angeles Juarez was the third politician to be killed in the state in eight days.
His party, el Partido de la Revolución Democrática, condemned the violence in Mexico in a statement, calling for the end of murders and for people to be able to vote safety in the country’s elections.
More than 100 politicians have been killed across the country in the lead up to general elections on July 1, when Mexico will vote for a new president as well as hundreds of other federal and state positions.
