Singapore professor won't teach at NY school
Thursday, July 23, 2009 By The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — A Singapore professor no longer will teach a human rights course at New York University following an uproar over her remarks about homosexuality.
NYU tells The New York Times that Dr. Thio Li-ann has changed her mind about teaching at its law school. The dean, Richard L. Revesz, cited a low course enrollment and "atmosphere of hostility by some members of our community."
Thio teaches at the National University of Singapore and also has served in her country's Parliament. In October 2007, she spoke out against repealing a law that criminalized gay sex.
Thio said doing so would "subvert social morality." She called homosexuality a "gender identity disorder."
Thio said she received hate mail after opposing the law's repeal.
