Dear readers,

Due to the increase in the number of our readers from mainland China, we will be setting up a new section on China to cater to them as well as Singaporeans who are interested to know more about China.

China is now the second largest economy in the world after the United States with a GDP of $7.8 trillion(2008) when measured on a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis.

In 2009 China’s GDP was more than half of the US, and its auto sales and shipbuilding industry also surpassed the US. China has been the fastest-growing major nation for the past quarter of a century with an average annual GDP growth rate above 10%.

What does a fast rising China mean to Singapore? Though China is not a foreign place to Singapore, we discover that many Singaporeans have little knowledge or understanding of Chinese culture, values and mindset. Some still look down on the mainland Chinese as uncouth, mercenary and dishonest people.

In our new China section, we shall endeavor to present China to you from an economic, social, political and most importantly historical perspective which you can’t find elsewhere.

Our widely travelled columnists including some from the Brotherhood Press will also bring you to the lesser known cities of China which have seen tremendous growth and development in the last decade such as Wuxi, Dongguan, Dalian, Wenzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing and Yiwu.

We welcome our China readers or Singaporeans working in China to join us as guest columnists in this section. Your views are important to us and we want to hear from you.

Email us at [email protected] to share with us your personal experiences of China.
