WITH just 90 days to go before the World Cup kicks off in South Africa, the Government is hopeful that ongoing talks to bring the live matches to Singapore will reach 'a sensible outcome'.
SingTel and StarHub recently made a new offer to Fifa, football's world governing body, and negotiations are ongoing, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew told Parliament yesterday.
Three Members of Parliament raised concerns about the current broadcast rights stand-off between the pay-television operators and Fifa.
The two companies had put in a joint bid to telecast the tournament in South Africa, which begins on June 11.
But a deal has not been struck yet, leaving Singapore soccer fans in danger of facing a World Cup blackout.
MPs Zaqy Mohamed (Hong Kah GRC), Arthur Fong (West Coast GRC) and Zainudin Nordin (Bishan-Toa Payoh) touched on the matter yesterday and asked if the Government would step in to resolve the impasse.
