When Steve Tan withdrew from the contest a few hours before nomination, the obvious thing to do would have been to put replacement, Dr Chia Shih Lu (CSL), in Tampines GRC. Instead, the PAPzis played musical chairs, jettisoning Baey Yam Kheng (BYK) to TGRC and placing CSL in Tanjong Pagar GRC (TPGRC).
The obvious reason for this would have been that the PAPzis wanted to let CSL come in on an easier ride, i.e. that TPGRC was less likely to have been contested.
But could that last fact be the reason for something else? According to Uncle Yap, the PAPzis filed only 87 declarations of political donations. If this is true, they could not have filed one for CSL. This, in turn, means he, and the entire GRC team, would have been disqualified. This would have given the opposition an unprecedented walkover.
Then again, he would only have been disqualified if someone had protested against his candidacy. And we learned today from an incident in Mountbatten SMC that only the opposing candidate(s) could lodge a protest.
In other words, the GRC that is less likely to be contested would also be less likely to face a protest. Between TGRC and TPGRC, the odds were clear.
And it might also explain why 35 seconds were all it took to disqualify the composite opposition team that tried to contest in TPGRC.
