H1N1 vaccine: New warnings, side effects to consider

PHOENIX -- The Centers for Disease Control has issued new warnings you'll want to consider if you or your family is thinking about getting the H1N1 vaccine.
Janey Pearl, spokeswoman for the Arizona Department of Health Services, said they are working with the Centers for Disease Control to track everyone receiving the H1N1 vaccine.
Each Tuesday the CDC distributes a form to be given to each adult and child receiving the vaccine.
The form allows the patient to document if they are experiencing a reaction to the vaccine and explains who the patient should contact to make a report.
So far in Arizona, out of the tens of thousands of H1N1 vaccines administered, Pearl said they have not received any complaints deemed "serious."
Pearl said of the roughly 90,000 vaccines administered to children, side effects were reported in about 30 kids.
These were mild, said Pearl, including symptoms of a red itchy arm, the sniffles or diarrhea.
There have been 37 reported cases for adults.
The CDC reports most side effects of the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine are similar to those of other flu shots.
Problems they deem mild include “soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given, fainting (mainly adolescents), headache, muscle aches, fever, and nausea. If these problems occur, they usually begin soon after the shot and last 1-2 days.”
The CDC also is reporting that, “life-threatening allergic reactions to vaccines are very rare. If they do occur, it is usually within a few minutes to a few hours after the shot is given.”
If you are having a severe reaction, the CDC said you may experience “high fever or behavior changes, difficulty breathing, hoarseness or wheezing, swelling around the eyes or lips, hives, paleness, weakness, a fast heart beat or dizziness.”
The CDC recommends seeking medical attention immediately if you spot any of the above symptoms.
The Arizona Department of Health Services told ABC15, "None of the 67 adverse events were serious [i.e. no hospitalizations, no life-threatening illness, no permanent disability, no deaths, and no significant medical problems such as Guillain-Barré syndrome]."
The State Health Department also said that as of November 13th the CDC has, "shipped 753,400 doses of H1N1 influenza vaccine to Arizona."
The CDC also urges you to, “ask your doctor, nurse, or health department to report the reaction by filing a Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) form. Or you can file this report yourself through the VAERS Web site at www.vaers.hhs.gov. You may call 1-800-822-7967 to receive a copy of the VAERS form.”
The CDC also said if you have a severe life-threatening allergy to chicken eggs do not get the vaccine.
Children represent one of the groups that the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends receive the H1N1 vaccine first.
This flu could be considered a young person’s influenza. So far the majority of deaths and incidents have been between 5 and 24 years old.
The CDC reports that “children 6 months through 4 years of age, and children, especially those younger than 5 years of age and those who have high risk medical conditions are at increased risk of influenza-related complications.”
For children younger than 9 that are being vaccinated for the first time the CDC recommends two doses separated by four weeks.
They add that, “infants younger than 6 months of age are too young to get the 2009 H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines.”
Michelle Turner runs a company in Peoria treating children for a wide range of developmental problems.
She said when it comes to severe swine flu vaccine reactions here are the top five warning signs.
1. Non-responsive - A healthy child starts to look if you say 'Where's Daddy? Where's the ball?" Suddenly you find yourself repeating it or saying it louder. Needing to touch or prompt your child to get their attention.
2. Staring - Babies and toddlers work the room. You don't loose a child into a good TV show until they're a few years older. If they seem like they're zoning out or losing track of what they are doing or obsessing over one item for a length of time.
3. Sensory & Touch - Babies and toddlers like to explore there environment. If they once enjoyed food & getting messy now the suddenly have fear of smells, messes, touch and/or sounds.
4. Fear - Does your child suddenly have fears? Does the child suddenly cling to a parent or have separation anxiety? Lost a sense of calm or peace that they previously had?
5. Slouching - babies and toddlers with a healthy nervous system don't slouch. Your child might suddenly seem heavy to pick up or carry around. They're not 'laid back' or easy going. Young children should be curious about the world around them.

In the meantime, the Kyrene School District is partnering with Mollen Immunization Clinics all this week to offer the H1N1 vaccine to parents who want their kids to be vaccinated.
Each day the clinics will be hosted at a different school location in the district.
