In this post we present a set of photos by Alexander Nemenov about the First Chechen war. Warning: some photos may seem unpleasant or scary.

The First Chchen War (the Chechen conflict 1994-1996) – military actions between forces of Russia (armed forces and the Ministry of the Interior) and a breakaway region Ichkeria in Chechnya and some other settlements of the neighbouring regions of the Russian Northern Caucasus with an aim to take control of the Chechen territory where in 1991 the Chechen Republic Ichkeria was proclaimed.
The conflict and the earlier events were characterized by a big amount of victims among civilians, soldiers and law-enforcement employees, there were revealed facts of ethnic cleansing of the population in Chechnya.

According to the Russian United Group Alignment the Russians losses were the following: 4103 people were killed, 1231 – were missing/deserted/captured, 19 794 – injured.
According to the Soldiers’ Mothers Commitee the losses were different: 14 000 people killed at least (confirmed documentarily). They counted only conscripts and didn’t count contractors, fighters of special units etc. According to the data of the Russian side 17 391 fighters were killed.
The exact number of the civilians who died during the conflict is unknown, according to different data it amounted to 50 000 – 80 000 people.
