Wanted: Names for NMPs
By Sue-Ann Chia
STARTING on Monday, people can submit names of those whom they think are suitable to be Nominated MPs.
They have until 4.30pm on May 11 to do so. Nomination forms are available from Parliament House, the Clerk of Parliament said in a statement on Sunday.
Six groups have also been invited to propose names. They include business and industry, labour, professions, social and community service organisations; tertiary education institutions; and media, arts and sports organisations.
Speaker Abdullah Tarmugi has met representatives of the six groups to inform them about the nomination procedure, the statement said. He has also appointed a coordinator for each group.
They are: Singapore Business Federation chairman Tony Chew, National Trades Union Congress president John De Payva, Academy of Medicine master Fock Kwong Ming, National Council of Social Service chief executive officer Ang Bee Lian, National University of Singapore president Tan Chorh Chuan and National Arts Council chairman Edmund Cheng.
Names submitted will go to the Special Select Committee, which will make recommendations to President SR Nathan. Those being nominated should have been involved in public service, brought honour to the country or distinguished themselves in their fields.
Under the Constitution, the person must be a Singaporean aged at least 21, in the current registers of electors and have lived in Singapore for at least the past 10 years.
Among other things, they must also be proficient enough to take an active part in parliamentary proceedings and must not be unsound or undischarged bankrupts.
The law allows for up to nine NMPs, and each term lasts 21/2 years. The last batch of nine NMPs was appointed in January 2007 after the 11th Parliament session opened. Among them, lawyer Siew Kum Hong will apply for a second term. 'I believe I can still contribute,' he told The Straits Times.
Mr Gautam Banerjee, PricewaterhouseCoopers executive chairman in Singapore, and Mr Edwin Khew, chairman of the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore, have not yet made up their minds. Two-term NMP and executive chairman of Raffles Medical Group Loo Choon Yong, however, said he had no plans to seek another term.
