Dr Balakrishnan to attend congress against sexual exploitation of kids
SINGAPORE: Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan will attend the third World Congress Against Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this week.
The World Congress is a globally coordinated effort to combat the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.
While there from November 25 to 28, Dr Balakrishnan will deliver a statement on Singapore’s adoption of the Stockholm Declaration and Yokohama Global Commitment to join international efforts to combat sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.
Stockholm was the site of the first World Congress in 1996 where 159 countries adopted the Stockholm Declaration and Agenda for Action.
A total of 161 countries adopted the Yokohama Global Commitment at the second World Congress held in Japan in 2001.
According to a statement from the Community Development, Youth and Sports Ministry, the third World Congress seeks to renew global commitment and galvanise international efforts to combat sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.
The expected outcome of the third World Congress is a pact for governments, civil society and private sector to re—affirm commitment to take action against sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.
