I agree that the level of awareness among the general population is still very low. We need to help the non-youth population see that it is a truly historical, international event and not just a youth event.

1) To begin with, we need to blanket the island's lamp posts and grassroots organisations with YOG banners, like what we do for each National Day. Shopping malls, community centres, churches, mosques, temples and other grassroots centres should be given banners to hang up.... See More

2) Next, I propose that the YOG mascots start making its rounds throughout the island, perhaps starting with the shopping malls.

Each weekend, they could do 2 shopping mall appearances with photo-opportunities, lucky draws, games, performances, powerpoint presentations, YOG trivia etc... with strong grassroot support. This could potentially cover the entire island by the time the games begin.

3) Thirdly, we need to send out the message to the adults that they too can be and need to be involved. Think of ways to engage them, and help them feel connected to this. Aggressively publicise opportunities for them to volunteer. The adults need to feel engaged.

4) To date, we have very little information like where will the venues be, what are the events, what are the highlights? We need an iconic venue or rallying cry to focus people's minds. For instance, the Beijing Olympics had the Bird's Nest and Water Cubes etc as a focal feature among other things.

For me up to this moment, there just isn't a clear picture of what will be happening, where will it be happening and how can I as an adult be involved. These information needs to reach the general population, not just the youths.

5) Can we also involve the corporate world, say through a YOG Fund for charities serving the disadvantaged children of the world, e.g. Unicef. They can contribute to this Fund, and in the process create greater awareness to their staffs. This can generate additional buzz among businesses.

These are some initial ideas.

I can be contacted at 9857-0574 if need be.

Cheers.
Brian Tan

Lim Boon Chuan I am one of the guilty ones, not knowing even when YOG suppose to be. We really need to rally our nation together to make YOG a success. It is being watch by the world and it concerns Singapore's prestige and reputation.

I guess the first and foremost is to raise public awareness. Mr Brian Tan had made a lot of good recommendations which will certainly get the ball rolling.

In the last 20 years or so, I've never seen Singaporeans so depressed. With so much uncertainties in their lives, who would have the mood to think about YOG? Can we share Vivian's million dollar salary too ?

He is paid millions to solve our problems, not ask us for solution to his problems.

Should have got a FT, or better still, Obama willl be glad to do his job at his salary level, instead of managing USA at a fraction of Vivian's salary.

obviously, ze whole event is in ze hands of n incomptent, clueless amateur ...

Why still don't they get it? People are not interested. Why are a bunch of them still wasting time suggesting futile ways to create awareness in things that people are not interested in? Just because a minister asks for suggestions? Geeze! Just tell the naked eunuch that he's naked and suggest that he wear some clothes.

Good grief. So much ball-carrying it's almost pornographic

This event just shows how incompetent "Vivian" is and indirectly the govt. And now they are finding excuses to protect themselves.

"This is not something we can plan top-down" --- This statement itself showed the incompetency and shifting the blame away to SG except themselves. While YOG is not on the same level as the actual games, it is nevertheless still an event of international interest and i believed that Vivian or at least his team should have done their homework before attempting to bid for the project. They would at least factor in the manpower requirement and how to get them before deciding if bidding to host the games will be feasible. Now they are finding excuses and making it a case that they had managed to bid the games and we the citizens are not doing our part to make it a success. Did they not find out before bidding for the games if Singaporeans would be interested in YOG or at least be excited by it? Did they not know that they would need around 10000 volunteers and working out a plan to recruit them before bidding for it? It is like they are doing things at the last min and handling them as they come along which show that they are incompetent, no vision, no planning, fire-fighting, no leadership and know nuts about event management.
