I REMEMBER the nationwide euphoria when Singapore beat Moscow for the right to host the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG). Since then, interest seems to have waned.
Now, as we start the countdown to the actual Games, the original excitement seems to have dissipated.
Let us remember that the YOG brings world-class youth athletes together. It is also a platform for Singapore to showcase its impressive infrastructure.
Yet, I am certain that few Singaporeans know the date of the Games this year.
There is hardly any buzz about it; no advertisements or posters announcing the event, which is scheduled to be held here from Aug14 to 26.
In contrast, the media blitz over the Shanghai World Expo has been much more visible. The YOG organisers should take a leaf out of the Expo's book and publicise our Games better.
For a start, run advertisements and reports in the media regularly to remind Singaporeans about the arrival of the Games.
While it may be too much to expect Singapore to be as memorable an Olympics host as Beijing was in 2008, we can try to make our Games unforgettable.
