No need for public debate with opposition Singapore Democratic Party: Dr Vivian Balakrishnan

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan "sees no need" for a public debate with the opposition Singapore Democratic Party or SDP before the coming elections.
The SDP had wanted a debate on three issues :
One was Dr Balakrishnan's ministry's handling of the Youth Olympics;
Two, the Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council's $8 million loss of residents' sinking funds to toxic investments in 2008, and;
Three, the sale of Fajar wet market to Sheng Shiong supermarket chain.
In an email response to MediaCorp, Dr Balakrishnan, who is anchor minister for Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency or GRC, said that the residents there know his track record.
He added that the priority now is to continue to meet as many residents as possible and work hard to win their support.
Dr Balakrishnan also said finances of the town council are a matter of public record.
MCYS, his ministry, had also earlier responded to criticism that it failed to spend within the YOG budget.
It pointed out YOG's expenditure was less than 10 per cent of the most recent Summer Olympics, although it was one-third the size of that event.
As for the issue on Sheng Sheng's takeover of Fajar wet market in Bukit Panjang, which resulted in rental increases for stallholders, incumbent MP Teo Ho Pin also said "there is nothing to debate about".
He said he has been working with the HDB, Sheng Shiong, the Fajar merchants and grassroots leaders to continue to improve the market.
The SDP has openly stated their intentions to contest Holland-Bukit Timah GRC as well as neighbouring Bukit Panjang, a Single Member Constituency.
