Plans for the joint mission were revealed by the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, physicist Aleksandr Sergeyev, who said that existing data shows that there are natural gas fields in the region.
“The Chinese side is looking for methane emissions [in the South China Sea] and links them to the presence of [gas] reserves. They invited us to take part in the expedition dedicated to exploration of gas hydrates, which begins approximately in July,” Sergeyev told TASS on Tuesday.

China, one of the world’s largest energy consumers, lacks its own natural gas reserves and thus has a huge interest in the mission, the scientist explained. Both countries have their own research vessels for expeditions, which can be carried off China’s south coast and other areas.
Gas hydrate, also known as methane hydrate, are icelike solids, in which small molecules of gas are trapped inside frozen water molecules. The substance is also known as flammable ice as the gas inside allows it easily catch fire despite low temperatures.

Natural gas hydrate is believed to be the best replacement for natural gas and oil. The volume of carbon contained in methane hydrates worldwide is estimated to be twice the amount contained in all fossil fuels on Earth, including coal, according to the US Geological Survey.
China is actively developing gas hydrate exploration. In 2017, Chinese miners successfully collected the frozen fuel for the first time from underneath the South China Sea.

The Power of Siberia natural gas pipeline was initially expected to start sending gas to China on December 20, 2019, and its completion is among Gazprom’s top priorities.
After talks in Beijing with officials of CNPC—with which Gazprom has a 30-year contract for the supply of an annual 1.3 trillion cu ft of natural gas via the Power of Siberia pipeline—Miller said:
“Construction of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline is going ahead of schedule, and Gazprom will start delivering gas to China well in advance, as early as December 1, 2019.”

The Power of Siberia gas pipeline will transport natural gas from the Irkutsk and Yakutia production centers to consumers in Russia’s Far East and to China.
Gazprom is dominating gas supplies to many European markets while it also vies to meet the surging Chinese natural gas demand as the country is in the middle of a massive switch from coal-fired to gas-fired heating in millions of homes.
In 2018, China’s natural gas imports—including pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports—soared by nearly 32 percent from 2017 to a record 90.39 million tons, solidifying China’s position as the world’s biggest importer of the fuel.

China became the world’s top natural gas importer—including LNG and pipeline—in October last year, overtaking Japan which imports all its gas as LNG.
According to Platts Analytics, China—currently the world’s second-largest LNG importer behind Japan—is set to overtake Japan as the top global LNG importer by 2022 as China will continue to be the largest growth factor behind global LNG demand growth.

The official said that Beijing's recent deterioration in relations with Washington had a serious, positive impact on Russia-China cooperation, stressing that the trade turnover between the partners had topped $100 billion last year. He added that the upward trend was especially noticeable in the agricultural sector.
“For instance, export of soybeans from Russia to China grew one-and-a-half times in 2018 and totaled 800,000 tons,” he said. “The growth was boosted by US-China trade war that evoked a sharp deterioration of soy imports from the US.”
According to the official, China is a huge marketplace for Russia’s agricultural produce, including corn, meat, grains, honey and other goods.
“In China we say ‘when God closes doors, he opens a window’,” he said, adding that China has opened its market for Russian producers.

“Trade war is really bad for China and the US, but it gives a chance, new opportunities for the third parties, and they should take a chance.”
The economist also said that most Chinese enterprises were worried that US sanctions against Russia might cause problems for mutual dollar transactions with Russian partners. However, a total ban on dollar payments holds the possibility for increasing transactions in national currencies, according to He.
