【18:00】警方及消防指出，涉事運油輪在越南註冊，在香港代理，載有25名越南籍男船員，由東莞來港，目的地為泰國，期間因燃油短缺，故停泊在香港南丫島加油，事發時一艘油躉靠近，並正接駁喉管準備入油，期間發生火警，並傳出約3下爆炸聲。消防接報後約30分鐘陸續到場，由於火勢及濃煙猛烈，且涉事運油輪載有危險品，另起火位置屬艙底，故消防員只能在遠距離射水，亦增加消防灌救難度。消防共派遣140名消防員，火勢在3時42分受控，並於4時30分救熄。
警方指，事後水面救起22人，事件中，一名船員被救起時嚴重燒傷，頭部有明顯傷痕，手部亦有骨折，其後證實死亡，另有7名傷員受傷，當中3人已經出院，一人則留醫深切治療部。當局暫未發現有油或危險品洩漏情況，另由於運油輪船身出現30度傾斜，故仍待相關人員將船身固定，消防才能上船進一步調查火警成因。警方重案組將繼續調查案件，事後亦已將事件通知越南領事館人員。
