KUALA LUMPUR: A woman was killed and a man seriously injured when a home-made explosive explo_ded in front of an apartment unit in Cheras. The two were inspecting the contents of a box placed outside their employer’s unit at Desa Tun Razak when the explosion occurred yesterday morning.

Both suffered 90% burns to the face and body. They were rushed to Universiti Kebang_saan Malaysia Hos_pital where Ng Siew Hong, 51, died nine hours later. Goh Yong Seng, 38, has been transferred to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital which has a better-equipped burns unit. He is reported to be in a critical condition.

The 51-year-old owner of the 12th floor apartment unit, who was awakened from his sleep when he heard a knock on his door at 8.30am yesterday, found a cardboard box with two pomeloes placed on top, on the floor outside his unit. The man, who wanted to be identified only as Lim, said he smelt kerosene and felt suspicious.

“I asked several neighbours if they had seen anyone place the box there but no one saw anything,” said Lim, who runs an Internet cafe and a restaurant on the ground floor of the apartment block. He then called Ng and Goh to inspect the contents of the box. The box exploded when the workers touched it.

Police said illegal money lending, gambling debts and business rivalry could be possible motives for the shocking attack. Acting Cheras OCPD Supt Abdul Rahim Hamzah Othman said: “A clear image of the suspect was caught on CCTV footage taken in the apartment lift. “We can clearly see his face.” He added that police were now looking for him.

He said police had recorded the statement of the unit owner, his staff and neighbours. The case is being investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Lim said he was confused and was in a state of shock but was thankful that his wife and two daughters were in Johor visiting a relative when the incident took place.

Only his son, in his 20s, was at home when the incident happened. At the hospital, the victims’ relatives declined to be interviewed. The explosion left scorch marks on the floor and ceiling of the corridor. The force of the blast also broke shutters and windows of at least five other units.

The police forensics team collected numerous samples from the scene for further inspection, including the fruits which were placed on the box. At least one pomelo was found after the explosion. Police hope to lift fingerprints from the skin of the fruit.

IGP: Not a terrorist act

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan has ruled out the bomb explosion as an act of terrorism. Urging the public to remain calm, he said initial findings suggested that the attack was financially-related. “We have ruled out any aspect of terrorism as the motive of the incident. My investigating officers have also briefed me that the incident was most likely linked to financial matters and we will continue investigating the matter thoroughly,” he said.

Fear and panic at blast site

Fear and panic at blast site

CHERAS: Many residents of Block 2, Desa Tun Razak thought their 16-storey high flat was about to collapse and that they would be buried alive. This was because the narrow corridors of the flat could not handle the rush of so many residents who were trying to flee after hearing the massive explosion and feeling the building vibrate.

“I was jolted awake by a loud explosion. I rushed out of my flat and saw the whole corridor packed with a large crowd,” said Myanmar Aye Min Naing who works in an aluminium plant nearby. He said he was so afraid that he even thought of jumping from his top floor unit to escape. “We thought the building would collapse because the explosion was so loud and we felt tremors,” he added. Aye is among hundreds of foreigners who live in the two-block apartment.

Aftermath: A general view of the Desa Tun Razak apartments.

Most of them occupy the higher levels of the apartment. One floor below, all housewife Suriani Mohd could think of when she heard the explosion was her children. “I rounded up all of them and we huddled together in our flat as we could not even get out of our door because of the mad rush,” she said. Suriani added that for a moment, she felt her world was going to end.

“The explosion was louder than a jet engine sound. The impact was so great it shattered windows all over the place,” she said adding that her three-year-old son suffered cuts from the flying debris. “When I saw rescue workers coming up, I knew that everything would be all right. I was so thankful to see them,” she added.

Contractor Zulkifli Yaakob, 34, and his family were sleeping when the blast happened. “I immediately told my family to pack up as, along with the blast, I smelt burning petrol and expected the worst,” he said. Residents also revealed that the victims operated a video gaming arcade on the ground floor of the building. “The victims have been doing that for more than three years,” one resident who refused to be named said. A check at the arcade found its doors locked.

KUALA LUMPUR: The man who delivered a home-made explosive to an apartment unit in Cheras which killed a woman and seriously injured a man on Sunday has been identified. One of the residents at the Desa Tun Razak apartments said he recognised the “bomber” from the CCTV footage policemen showed him when he was interviewed.

“When I saw the image, I knew I had seen him before,” said the resident who declined to be named. The suspect is believed to have patronised the Internet cafe owned by the man for whom the bomb was intended. According to sources, the suspect is believed to be a 45-year-old contractor.

Several residents claim that the Internet cafe, located on the ground floor, is a spot for illegal gambling. It is believed the man may have suffered heavy losses there and still had a debt with the owner. “I gamble there once in a while. And I have seen him gamble there many times,” said the resident, claiming that the suspect once lost RM36,000.

According to the police, the suspect’s face was clearly visible in the CCTV footage. City CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Datuk Ku Chin Wah, who confirmed the suspect has been identified, said police were trying to trace him. “We believe the motive was his huge losses from gambling,” he said. Meanwhile, the body of Ng Siew Hong, 51, was taken to her hometown in Johor Baru yesterday.

Goh Yong Seng, 38, is reportedly still in critical condition at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The two were inspecting the contents of a box placed outside their employer’s unit on the 12th floor when the explosion occurred on Sunday morning.

The 51-year-old owner, who only wanted to be identified as Lim, was awakened from his sleep at 8.30am when he heard a knock on his door. Lim said he found a cardboard box with two pomeloes placed on top in front of his door.

He said he smelt kerosene and felt suspicious. “I asked several neighbours whether they had seen anyone put the box there but no one saw anything,” said Lim, who also runs a restaurant on the ground floor. He then called Ng and Goh to check the box, which exploded when they touched it.
