Victoria braces for damaging winds

Posted 7 hours 37 minutes ago

A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued for the whole of Victoria.

Residents are being warned to expect winds of more than 100 kilometres an hour in some regions, as the winds move through Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

Gale warnings have been issued for Port Phillip and Western Port, as well as for the stretch of coast between the South Australian border and 60 nautical miles east of Gabo Island.

Weather bureau senior forecaster Phil King says wind gusts have reached 80 kilometres an hour in Melbourne and up to 90km/h in the ranges to the west.

"The front's not expected to get to our western border until tomorrow morning and then move across the Melbourne area late morning, early afternoon," he said.

"So the winds have the potential to continue to increase, with the windiest period coming when that front moves through.

"We're expecting winds to gust up to around 100, 110 kilometres, perhaps a little bit higher on the ranges.

"And it looks like it'll be fairly widespread right across the state.

"It probably won't start to moderate until Monday."

A Victorian man who narrowly escaped the Black Saturday bushfires has been missing for more than three days.

Hendrik Vreulink, 60, was last seen at a relative's house in Diamond Creek in Melbourne's outer northeast about 8:00pm (AEST) last Wednesday.

"Hendrik is a survivor of the Black Saturday bushfires and narrowly made it out of his Strathewen home, which was lost in the fires," a police spokeswoman said.

He is caucasian, 183 centimetres tall, has a medium build and straight blonde short hair.

Mr Vreulink has blue eyes, a fair complexion and a beard and moustache.

It is believed he was last seen wearing a light blue windcheater and dark pants.
