Last night, TCS5 aired a good movie for the Saturday late night slot - V For Vendetta. It's about dystopia (as opposed to utopia). Britain was set in future to become what Germany and Japan would have become had they won WW2. This character V was a victim of human chemical research, coming back for vendetta. The movie started with him blowing up the Old Bailey (British court) and ended with his blowing up Parliment on Guy Fawkes' bonfire night. In between, he killed everybody involved up to the High Chancellor (equalivalent of Monarch + Prime Minister = absolute dictationship). He died in the end too, but liberased the British masses. Based on a series of comics, this is a good movie that I'd recommend anyone to watch at least once. For those who missed it, it's well worth going out and get a DVD.

Did MDA censor any part of it? I don't bother to watch it on TV when it can be downloaded from the internet.

Yup, I watched it. We need a 'V'.

I casually channel surf & was hooked last night to the show's '1984'-style orwellian mood - totally morose & sinister.

WTF torture the girl just to 'enlighten' her ... to make her free since she can withhold info & rather die. warped logic....

Personally, as a sammyboy, like many samsters, I prefer V for you-know-what instead of V for Vendetta .......

No wonder generations today are weak and replaceable . Weak generations holding on to futile beliefs .

You're taking it too seriously. I'm just taking it as entertainment, a good movie. Even PAP and MDA allow it to be aired, why be so uptight and link it with real life. It's just a movie based on old comics. Comic relief done up in a classy movie for all to enjoy and apprepriate, that's all.

They're not worried about people attempting to imitate and try to blow up the Court or Parliament. Whereas you think that Singaporeans are too weak for that for them to worry, I'd beg to differ. I'd like to believe that Singaporeans are mature enough to enjoy a good movie.

If you could get as many citizens with you to wear so many TBT T-shirts as they could get to wear the mask....

V For Vendetta is a very extreme dramatisation of the Stockholm syndrome. The hostage actually pulled the trigger (lever for a train of explosives) for the hostage taker even after the hostage taker is dead.

I appreciated the movie not only for its entertainment factor, but also for its messages and references to what is occuring today. I also disagree with the notion that the movie supports terroism. The movie addresses the many abuses that some governments (one in particular) are casting on its citizens. From the monitoring of phone tapping and conversations (warrantless wire tapping programs), to the fear machine that is the media, the Wachowski brothers wisely use present-day references to strike home the fact that V's vendetta is to do away with oppressive institutions. V said in the film that, "People should not fear its government, rather government should fear its people." I think that movie illustrated that belief and more.

It was a wonderful movie. I just hope viewers of the movie don't get blinded by the action. Viewers should focus on the underlying issues that the movie is trying to address. The political message is what made the movie.

A very good synopsis and analysia. Yes, it's meant to reflect that that real terrorist is the government, an everyday lifelong terrorist, if the people allow government encroachment and power to keep building up. The proverbial frog in a slow cookionng pot.

The message is not in the bombings and the killings. The message is in the background throughout the movie for those who can see the trees for the forest. What an unrestrained government can do to people and lives.

Lord Ackton famously said, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Singapore has our very own Jamie Han who also famously said, a despot however enlightened is still a despot.

Unfortunately, political themed graphic novels have to be spiced up with sex and violence to attract interest. V the comic book and movie can be interpreted on many levels.
Check out the manga called Sanctuary if you can get your hands on it. it talks about reform of the japanese diet (parliament, not sushi).
