Man accused of shooting restaurant waiter 11 times found not competent to stand trial
The man who authorities say shot a restaurant waiter 11 times during an attempted burglary in Las Vegas in December 2021 was found unfit to stand trial, a court said.
THE MAN WHO authorities say shot a restaurant waiter 11 times during an attempted burglary in Las Vegas’ Chinatown in December 2021 is not competent to stand trial, a court said.
Rashawn Gaston-Anderson, 23, was determined to be “not capable of understanding the charges against him and is unable to assist counsel in his defense,” according to court records.
Gaston-Anderson entered the Shanghai Taste restaurant through a back door shortly before 3 a.m. in an attempted burglary on Dec. 20, 2021. When head waiter Chengyan Wang intervened, the man fired four gunshots to his abdomen, one to his shoulder, another through his neck and hand. Wang suffered more gunshot wounds to other areas on his body.
Wang spoke little English but knew Gaston-Anderson wanted money.
“I turn around trying to run to the front door, I can feel he is starting to shoot at me, I can feel bullets shooting at my back,” he said through a translator.
Wang was treated at the University Medical Center. He then recovered at a rehabilitation hospital after undergoing surgeries and physical therapy.
Gaston-Anderson was arrested on Dec. 27 and charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery and battery with use of a deadly weapon as well as burglary of a business and petit larceny. His bail was set at $10,000.
Gaston-Anderson is in custody at the Mental Health Development Services for treatment. He awaits further trial proceedings after he returns to court.
