WORLDWIDE IMPACT: Edison Chen's sex photo scandal has led to overwhelming media attention on the star wherever he appears. TNP PICTURE: CHOO CHWEE HUA

SEX pictures will make your career, not break it in America, so come on over.

That's the advice celebrity gossip columnist Perez Hilton has for actor Edison Chen.

That Edison's exploits and the subsequent scandal caused a blip on Hilton's screen shows how wide-reaching the impact has been.

The photos - showing Edison in compromising positions with various celebrities including Canto-pop star Gillian Chung and former actress Bobo Chan - became an Internet sensation when they were posted a year ago.

Hilton's main focus on his blog is usually A-list Hollywood stars.

Edison's story shared space with reports on Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears.

'We feel sorry for the poor perv!' posted Hilton, in his report of Edison's appearance in front of a Hong Kong magistrate in a Vancouver court.

Edison, who refused to testify in Hong Kong, gave evidence to a Hong Kong team in Canada ahead of the trial of computer technician Sze Ho-chun, who has been accused of leaking nude photos of the actor with eight actresses and singers.

Followed the news since it broke

When contacted by Hong Kong's Sunday Morning Post in Los Angeles, Hilton said he had been following the case since it first broke last year.

'There's been a few cases. But in this country, sex tapes help your career and (they) don't harm it.

'My advice to him would be: move to America.'

Earlier, Edison had been reported as saying: 'I thought that when you deleted a file and put it in the trash bin, it was deleted.'

Hilton had this piece of advice in his blog

'The trash doesn't work to its full effect if you don't empty it, buddy!' he posted.

Edison walked away from the entertainment industry after the scandal broke in February last year.

On Friday, he made an appearance here at the launch of a new burger by Carl's Jr.

Hilton told the Post: 'At the moment he doesn't have any presence in America whatsoever. I decided to write about him since I happen to have an international audience, even in Asia. Plus, I personally think it's an interesting story.'

Journalism professor at Chinese University, Anthony Fung Ying-him, told the newspaper that it might be harder for Edison to be accepted back into Hong Kong than it would be if he worked in the US had the scandal broken there.

'Studies of Chinese populations have shown that people in Hong Kong, in terms of sex, are more conservative,' Professor Fung said. 'And for most types of Hong Kong people, the kinds of sex practices shown in the photos are taboo.'

Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung, one of several local celebrities shown in the photos, broke her silence last Friday.

She said Edison had never apologised, and that she was still reeling from the ordeal a year later. She also called him a liar.

'He has never apologised to us personally,' Cecilia told iCable in an interview broadcast late Friday.

'He should at least have called us to say sorry if he genuinely admitted his mistake.'

She added: 'The photos are still circulating online. How can we live a healthy and happy life? How can we put ourselves back on our feet?'

Cecilia said she decided to break her silence after Chen gave evidence earlier this week, reported AFP.

Cecilia, 28, angrily said: 'You should not have come out (now)... saying one thing but doing another in a bid to win the public's forgiveness while hurting us.'
