US mayor charged with robbery and assault
A prominent figure in US has been charged with robbery, assault and misdemeanor battery. San Gabriel mayor Albert Y.M. Huang, 35, allegedly snatched a woman’s purse, then got into his SUV early Friday. The woman, who attempted to stop him, was clinging to his vehicle but Huang sped off, taking her for a wild ride.
Police said Huang was in jail for investigation of felony assault, felony robbery and misdemeanor battery. The mayor has been released on a US$100,000 bail. Police said Huang was in a parking lot arguing with the woman about money, when he grabbed her purse and got into his SUV.
Investigators said the woman was standing on the sidestep and was reaching through the passenger window to retrieve something when Huang sped away, reaching speeds of 72km/h. Huang was born in Taiwan. He migrated to US with his family at the age of nine. He is married with two children.
Sources said the woman, 33, was his mistress. Huang has in a statement, released via his lawyer, said the incident was a misunderstanding between him and his female friend. A security guard, who witnessed the incident, rushed into his vehicle and gave chase. He managed to block Huang’s car soon after and rescued the woman.
