MTA flushed $250M down the drain: Liu
by Lisa Fogarty, Assistant Editor
07/02/2009

The Metropolitan Transit Authority may have had the best of intentions.
But that didn’t stop City Council Transportation Committee Chairman John Liu (D-Flushing) from launching a scathing appraisal of the way the MTA failed to execute a $307 million subway security project with former contractor Lockheed Martin Transportation Security Solutions. The two organizations are currently embroiled in a federal lawsuit to determine a resolution for the failed plans.

Subway fare hikes go into effect in New York
+ -
09:38, June 29, 2009

The subway fare hikes in New York City took effect on Sunday, with the price of a single subway/train ride or one-way bus trip rising 25 cents to 2.25 dollars.

Before New York State approved a bailout last month boosting mass transit subsidies, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York (MTA) once considered a 3-dollar base fare, a 100-dollar-plus monthly MetroCard and service cuts such as axing dozens of bus routes.

The roughly 10 percent fare hikes were initiated as part of the state legislature's financial rescue of the MTA, which was moving toward a 23 percent increase in fare revenue and widespread service reductions so as to narrow its budget gap.

The state-approved financial plan includes a new payroll tax paid by employers in the MTA's 12-county region, higher vehicle registration and parking fees. Fares and tolls are rising about 10 percent, according to New York Daily News.

The funds are reportedly needed to help plug massive budget gaps partly caused by sinking revenues and soaring expenses during the recession, officials said.

This fare tick-up leads to a rare back-to-back series of hikes, taking account of MTA's upward fare adjustment in March 2008 in New York.

Editorial: Another derailment

Steve Levy now knows what it’s like to wait for bus service.

Immediately following the New York Legislature’s vote to spend $2.2 billion to bail out the Metropolitan Transit Authority, the Suffolk County executive called for New York lawmakers to use about $26 million of that money to help the MTA take over Suffolk Transit, the rickety and cash-strapped mass transit system.

Levy’s reasoning: The state placed $127 million in new fees and taxes on Suffolk County residents, and the revenue generated by the county to operate the MTA has crossed the $500 million mark, nearly $350 per resident. By the way, that doesn’t include fare costs, which rose last week.

The Suffolk County Legislature also is pushing for the takeover, pointing to the deal in Nassau, where that county contributes less than 10 percent of the operating costs for the MTA-run bus service. Even so, Nassau County contributes $10.5 million per year out of its operating budget to run Long Island Bus, which is enough for County Executive Tom Suozzi to call for an MTA Regional Bus System.

Suffolk, however, gets the worse deal. That county’s bailout money goes toward only Long Island Rail Road improvements. The bus system is on its own.

And that’s too bad.

That's what will happened if you vote for politician who promised you heaven inorder to get your vote. Sooner or later, some one is going to pay for those cheap rides on the mass transit. Just like those who take a 100% loan to buy a car, you only feel the pinch when you sell it.

Haha time for USA to pay for its imperialist attitude for the past 150 odd years.

Where the fuck the USA government get so much money when they are still a net borrower? Are they turning to the printing machine for money!? Massive inflation in USA in the coming years perhaps?
