The US embassy in Bangkok will close from noon on Tuesday after being alerted by police about a one-hour rally by "several hundred" demonstrators starting at 1pm.
The embassy said in a message sent to its citizens in Thailand that visa and other appointments set for Tuesday afternoon will be rescheduled to later dates and non-essential personnel will be ordered to leave the office.
Many US embassies have faced Muslim protests against the "Innocence of Muslims" movie which ridicules the Prophet Mohammad.
The embassy urged its citizens in the country to be alert, although there are no sign of threats against them.
