Former CIA base chief seeks pardon for terror suspect kidnap conviction from Italy's president

MILAN – The office of Italy's president says it has received a pardon request from a former CIA base chief in Milan who was convicted of kidnapping a terror suspect as part of the CIA's extraordinary rendition program.

President Giorgio Napolitano's office confirmed Thursday the receipt of a letter from Robert Seldon Lady. It declined to reveal the contents.

Lady was among 26 CIA and U.S. government employees who were convicted in absentia in the 2003 kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric. Italy has requested the extradition of Seldon Lady, who received the longest sentence of nine years.

Napolitano previously pardoned a U.S. Air Force colonel convicted in the case, saying it was unprecedented to try a U.S. military officer for acts committed in Italy.
