Why are MRT General Ticketing Machines going extinct?

A STOMPer is puzzled by the fact that General Ticketing Machines (GTMS) are disappearing from MRT stations everywhere.

Here's what the surprised STOMPer wrote in an email today (Sep 14):

"General Ticketing Machines (GTMs) are being removed from MRT stations all over the island.

"The pictures show an example. The blank metal walls mark the former positions of removed GTMs.

"Why remove them when people need them for their services?"
