A Public awareness walk to end violence against women.

UNIFEM Singapore, together with AWARE, SCWO and Café Diplo, invites you to 'Take A Step to Make a Change'; a walk to increase community awareness of violence against women. The walk comes under the U60 activities through the month of November and December 2008.

The walk will be held on 6th December 2008, beginning at 4pm from UNIFEM Singapore's office at 2 Nassim Road. Wearing t-shirts especially designed for the day, participants will walk down the main thoroughfare of Orchard Road to The Heeren Shops building before returning to UNIFEM Singapore, thus forming a "U".

Violence affects one in three women in their lifetime, and is a scourge that preys on women and girls of ALL nations, of ALL cultures. In recognition of the rights of women, the United Nations officially declared 25th November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1999.

This day also marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, a global campaign that recognizes the right of each individual to live a live free from violence and abuse. The 16-day period encompasses World AIDS Day on 1st December and International Human Rights Day on 10th December.

UNIFEM Singapore is encouraging men and women from all walks of life in Singapore, to take a small step to show support and bring awareness, on an issue that affects thousands of women throughout the world.

This event is in support of U60, a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in Singapore.
