An unemployed man has been sentenced to two months' jail for torturing a stray cat and stealing from a bookstore.
The Straits Times reported today that Lin Chuan had been caught hanging the four-year-old cat from a parapet by a neighbour, who called the police. The cat was later found dead in a drain.
The district court was told that Lin had tied a black rope around the stray cat's neck before dragging it around the corridor outside his flat while the cat struggled to free itself.
He then went on to hang the cat from the parapet.
The English daily said that the police found the dead cat in a drain behind the block. A black rope was found hidden behind Lin's refrigerator.
Lin also pled guilty to stealing 23 magnetic compasses worth $411 from the Popular Bookstore at Lorong 6 Toa Payoh on March 19.
He will serve two months in jail, including two weeks' imprisonment for theft.
