Using false papers that stated she was 23 years old, a 16-year-old Indonesian came here to work as a maid in 2009.

Within five days of starting work, Vitria Depsi Wahyuni strangled her 87-year-old employer to death at her home in Farleigh Avenue in Serangoon Gardens estate.

On Wednesday, she pleaded guilty to committing culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Christina Koh asked the High Court to sentence Vitria, now 19 years old, to 20 years in jail as the offence was premeditated and the attack on Sng Gek Wah was brutal and savage.

She said that the maid had waited for the elderly woman to fall asleep before attacking her between 8pm and 3.15am on Nov 25, 2009.

A 16-year-old domestic helper strangled her 87-year-old employer to death while she was fast asleep.

Vitria Depsi Wahyuni managed to come to Singapore to work at just 16 years old as she used false papers to show that she was 23 years old.

According to The Straits Times, she worked as a domestic helper in 2009 and was employed by the deceased, Sng Gek Wah.

Less than a week after starting her job at Sng's home in Farleigh Avenue in Serangoon Gardens Estate, Vitria, then only 16, waited for Sng to fall asleep before strangling her.

She then put on a façade by running out of the house to seek help. A taxi driver heard her pleas and called the police.

She said that Sng fell but after police investigations, it showed that Sng had been strangled by Vitria.

Vitria, now 19, has pleaded guilty to committing culpable homicide not amounting to murder on Wednesday (15 Feb).

Deputy Public Prosecutor Christina Koh requests for the high Court to sentence the domestic helper to a jail time of 20 years as the attack was described as brutal and savage.

However, defence lawyer Mohamed Muzammil Mohamed defended that Vitria was young and immature when she committed the offence and thinks that eight to 10 years of jail term is appropriate.

The defence said that she has a low IQ of 63 and was unable to withstand the pressure of Sng who had often hurled stinging remarks at her and called her stupid in Bahasa.

She was also not given the time or opportunity to settle down to her new environment as she used to live in was a remote village located in East Java.

She will be sentenced by Justice Choo Han Teck on 7 March.

Teen maid jailed for strangling elderly employer to death

SINGAPORE: A teenage Indonesian has been sentenced to 10 years' jail for strangling her elderly employer.

Vitria Depsi Wahyuni, 19, could have been put behind bars for 20 years or given life imprisonment.

She pleaded guilty in February to culpable homicide in the death of 87-year-old Sng Gek Wah in November 2009 at Farleigh Avenue.

Vitria committed the crime in the Serangoon Gardens estate just five days after she started working for Madam Sng.

The accused came to Singapore with a passport that identified her as Fitriah.

She had lied that she was 24 years old when she was only 16.

On November 25, 2009, Vitria waited for the Mdm Sng to fall asleep before attempting to smother her with a pillow at about 10pm.

But Mdm Sng woke up, put up a struggle with the maid and fell to the floor.

Vitria then tried to silence her by strangling her.

The accused got angry and struck the victim's forehead with a vase.

Subsequently, Vitria pretended to run out of the house to seek help.

She managed to hail a taxi.

The driver called the police.

During the police investigations, Vitria told officers that Mdm Sng fell by herself.

But the police later found that the maid had strangled the elderly woman with her hands.

Justice Choo Han Teck pointed out that the High Court could put Vitria away for life, but said the circumstances and mitigating factors warranted a jail term of not more than 10 years.

The prosecution, which had argued that the offence was premeditated and described the attack as "brutal and savage", had pressed for a jail term of 20 years.

But Vitria's lawyer Mohamed Muzammil Mohamed argued that a jail term of between eight and 10 years was appropriate as his client was young and immature at the time of the offence.

Vitria is said to have an IQ of 63, which is below average.

The defence lawyer said she could not cope with the frequent nagging and scolding by Mdm Sng, who was said to have often called the maid 'stupid'.

Indonesian maid Vitria Wahyuni, who was jailed 10 years for strangling her 87-year-old employer, may get a heavier term.

This possibility has arisen after prosecutors filed an appeal against the sentence earlier this week.

Vitria had pleaded guilty in the High Court earlier this month to culpable homicide for the death of Madam Sng Gek Wah on Nov 25, 2009, at the latter's terrace house in Serangoon Gardens.

The maid, aged 16 then, was just four days into the job.
