The United States is heading towards civil war, Congressman Steve King has warned. His sentiments are mirrored by a troubling new poll which shows that 31% of Americans believe a second civil war is likely in the next five years.
The Republican congressman from Iowa made his eyebrow-raising comment in response to a report about protesters occupying an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Portland, Oregon. He tweeted that “America is heading in the direction of another Harpers Ferry,” adding that “after that comes Ft. Sumter.”

King was referring to the siege of Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina in April 1861, which marked the start of the Civil War. Harper’s Ferry was a Virginia town where militant abolitionist John Brown led a raid against a federal armory in October 1859, in a failed attempt to spark a slave uprising.
Upheaval over US President Donald Trump’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy, as well as a child detention practice which was reversed last week via executive order, has left America deeply divided.

New American Civil War? Some people think it’s already begun
Amid conflicting accusations of creeping fascism and perilous open borders, the congressman’s startling belief appears to be shared by a surprisingly large percentage of Americans. A new Rasmussen national telephone and online survey found that 31 percent of likely US voters say it’s “likely” that the United States will descend into a second civil war in the next five years. Eleven percent of respondents said that civil war in the near future was “very likely,” while only 29 percent said it was “not at all likely.”
Democrats (37 percent) were more fearful than Republicans (32 percent) and voters not affiliated with either major party (26 percent) that a second civil war is at hand. The survey also found that 59 percent of all voters are concerned that those opposed to Trump’s policies will resort to violence.
And while many Americans appear to be bracing for some kind of violent internal conflict, others believe that the second civil war has already begun. Tennessee Law Professor Glenn Harlan Reynolds argued in a recent USA Today column that a new civil war is “well underway,” while Bloomberg columnist Thomas Schaller declared that America was “at the beginning of a soft civil war.”
But pundits aren’t the only ones raising the alarm: Provocative statements about the rise of “fascism” and the need for “revolution” have become commonplace among American actors, musicians and activists.

The beginning of America's bloody Civil War is generally remembered as the opening shot on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861.
And Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, fears another Fort Sumter is in our near future.
"America is heading in the direction of another Harpers Ferry," the controversial conservative tweeted Sunday. "After that comes Ft. Sumter."
King's tweet linked to an article from the conservative online news site PJ Media about a group of protesters who were staging an "occupy"-style campout in front of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement holding facility in Portland, Ore.

Harper's Ferry, Va., was the site of an 1859 raid on a federal armory led by militant abolitionist John Brown. Brown's attack was aimed at sparking a massive slave uprising and the violent act helped push the divided country toward civil war.
Political emotions have been running high in recent weeks after a massive public outcry against the administration's "zero tolerance" immigration policy when it resulted in the systematic separation of migrant families.

King's concern that the U.S. could be heading for another violent, internal conflict has been echoed by many voices in recent days after two administration officials were driven from restaurants because of opposition to their political views.
A call from Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., for activists to ramp up such harassment has further fueled concern that civility in American politics has eroded.
King himself has a history of remarks that have been criticized as inflammatory, divisive and racist. For example, he once said, "We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies," in a tweet about immigration and shifting demographics.
King also recently mocked the appearance of Parkland, Fla., shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez and retweeted a known Nazi sympathizer who has expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler.

Iowa Representative Steve King Under Fire For "Racist' Tweet

U.S.
Republican Congressman Steve King of Iowa tweeted Sunday that the United States is heading toward another civil war.
“America is heading in the direction of another Harpers Ferry,” he wrote. “After that comes Ft. Sumter.”

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia is where abolitionist John Brown led a raid against a federal armory in an attempt to start a slave revolt. The battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War, in which the Confederate artillery bombarded the Union army in the Charleston, South Carolina harbor.

King’s tweet was in response to an article about protesters occupying a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Portland, Oregon, in an attempt to pressure the Trump administration to end its “zero tolerance” immigration policy. The policy resulted in more than 2,000 children being separated from their parents before President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this month that ordered families to be kept together. The rest of the policy, however, was not changed.

“If you are smuggling a child then we will prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you as required by law,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said while outlining the stricter immigration stance in April. “If you don’t like that, then don’t smuggle children over our border.”

Trump initially claimed he didn’t have the ability to end the practice of separating children from their parents in families that cross the border illegally, but signed an executive order to halt the process amid intense backlash from both parties.
King is no stranger to controversy. The conservative congressman retweeted noted Nazi sympathizer Mark Collett earlier this month. Collett is a British activist who has described himself as an admirer of Adolf Hitler. King said he was unaware Collet was a white supremacist but has not deleted the tweet.

In the past, King has also compared immigrants to dogs, said “we can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies” and argued, without evidence, that immigrants have “calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.” King has also tweeted, “Diversity is not our strength.”
King also participated in the promotion of the unfounded birther conspiracy that raised questions about former President Barack Obama’s birthplace. “I looked into that,” he said in a 2012 interview. King said newspaper clippings from Hawaii that announced Obama’s birth could’ve been sent “by telegram from Kenya.”

The demise of an America that is out to stir up troubles will be welcome by the world.

The Republicans decided long ago that they would not compromise after Obama got elected. McConnell publicly declared that he would obstruct Obama in every way. Instead of judging a policy on merit, McConnell would delay or derail every Obama's proposal. The biggest sin was to block Obama's SCOTUS nomination. It was unprecedented and demonstrated to progressive Americans that the Republicans would do anything to dominate the country.
Now, that the Republicans have control of all levers of government and a near stranglehold of the legal branch, there is no other option for progressives to defend themselves except to take up arms.

The king of power handshakes, US President Donald Trump, was caught unaware when Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa outdid him with an alpha male handshake.
Arriving at the White House on Wednesday, Marcelo de Sousa emerged from his car and approached Trump in a rather decisive manner.
The video captures the moment when the Portuguese president abruptly outstretched his arm and grabbed Trump’s hand, knocking him off balance.

Lasting for just a few seconds, the unexpected ‘power-shake’ created an awkward moment for President Trump, whose battle to establish dominance through firm handshakes was lost on this occasion.
