Tom Carter, the Reform UK candidate for Glastonbury, has categorically distanced himself from controversial chalk messages appearing on pavements in Glastonbury.

Messages chalked on the pavements urged people to vote for Reform UK, voicing support for the party's leader, Nigel Farage, and the local candidate, Tom Carter.

But one message urged people to "stop Islam, vote Reform UK." prompting backlash and concern within the local community.

In response, Carter issued a firm rejection of the sentiments expressed in the message, and said that his is committed to an inclusive vision for the UK, underpinned by respect for all religious beliefs.

"My dream for this country is to find what we have in common, regardless of age, race, or religion, instead of magnifying our differences or searching for reasons to be offended," Carter explained. "The freedom to follow any religion is a cornerstone of our society. The notion that I would want to 'stop Islam' is not only wrong; it is against everything I stand for."

• Somerset Council has confirmed the full list of candidates standing on July 4, following the close of nominations at 4pm on Friday, June 7. This election will be the first under the new electoral boundaries, increasing the number of seats within the Somerset Council area from five to seven.

Here are the candidates standing for the Glastonbury and Somerton seat:

• Tom Carter (Reform UK)
• Jon Cousins (Green Party)
• Sarah Dyke (Liberal Democrat) - currently division member for Blackmoor Vale
• Hal Hooberman (Labour)
• Faye Purbrick (Conservative) - currently division member for Yeovil South

Residents have until Tuesday, June 18, to register to vote via gov.uk. The deadline to apply for a postal vote or a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday, June 19.

This will be the first general election requiring valid voter ID for in-person voting at polling stations. Accepted forms of ID include a passport, driving licence, or an older person's bus pass. Out-of-date photo ID is acceptable if it still looks like you, and the name on the ID matches your registered name.
