A brain surgeon has appeared before a medical tribunal accused of posing for a series of selfies and photos while dressed in military clothing and brandishing a range of weapons including knives, guns and even a rocket launcher.

Dr Sayed Talibi, 38, also allegedly possessed 'sensitive material' linked to the terrorists involved in the 9/11 attacks and downloaded 'material relevant to an ignition device' and videos of beheadings.

Other images found on his devices included heavy armoured vehicles and weaponry, an aerial photograph of RAF Lakenheath and army bases in Italy, Greece, Turkey and the UK.

Dr Talibi, who spent two years in the army cadets and worked for the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, is appearing before a medical tribunal misconduct hearing.

He's accused of risking bringing the profession into disrepute by his actions and faces a string of charges which include him allegedly attacking and raping a woman, as well as uploading images of him participating in live brain surgery on a dating website.

It's alleged he accumulated a range of images, videos and documents on his electronic devices between 2007 and 2018.

Some photos show him posing with a large quantity of knives and an axe, which he admits.

But others, including selfies, allegedly show him holding or pointing various firearms including rifles, semi-automatics and handguns and dressed in military clothing.

In one selfie, he's said to be dressed in a green balaclava, green neck scarf and black clothing with his fists clenched.

One image allegedly shows him holding a rifle and a Russian rocket launcher and another holding a knife to the throat of a woman.

Dr Talibi is also said to have sent a Snapchat message, which included an image of three knives, a meat cleaver and a small sword, which read: 'Who wants to play?'

Some of the images are thought to have been taken 'in a foreign location' but one photo, showing semi-automatic firearms, pistols and magazines laid out on floor of a garden patio, is believed to have been taken in the UK.

When questioned by Simon Jackson KC, for the General Medical Council, Dr Talibi admitted that on reflection he'd been 'foolish' to pose for the photos but he'd thought 'it was cool' at the time.

It's further alleged Dr Talibi possessed 'a quantity of sensitive material' connected to the terrorists in the 9/11 attacks, including immigration, customs and ID documents and downloaded articles about making an ignition device from foil scrap.

Graphic images he allegedly downloaded or viewed of beheadings included members of the Taliban killing civilians or Pakistani soldiers and he admits to possessing an image of a waterboarding device.

Further charges against D Talibi concern allegations he attacked a woman - referred to as Ms A - and behaved in a threatening and abusive manner towards her, which included threatening to waterboard her and brandishing a knife in front of her.

He is also accused of raping the same woman three times in 2017 and was later arrested and questioned by police, the tribunal heard.

Giving evidence before the tribunal, he said he denied all the allegations relating to Ms A and said their intimate relations were 'always consensual'.

He admits additional charges of making racist and discriminatory comments, saying he 'hated' non-Muslims, Afghans and Afghan culture and using the derogatory term 'kuffar' to describe non-Muslims.

Dr Talibi said he accepted his language, which he'd used in front of Afghan people, was racist and 'offensive' and he regretted using it.

'What I said was out of frustration and in the heat of the moment, and I am ashamed of what I said and regret what I said,' he said.

He admits previously creating a profile on a dating website in which the described himself as a '28-year-old brain surgeon' and uploading a photograph of him participating in live brain surgery that showed the exposed brain of a patient.

Dr Talibi also admits attempting to defraud EDF Energy by claiming an outstanding £770 energy bill was caused by a tenant who'd lived at his property.

But he denies knowingly taking £23.50 worth of milk powder form an Asda supermarket without paying for it and then trying to bribe security staff.

Speaking about the EDF bill, he described his actions as 'stupid'.

'I am ashamed of what I did it was a great lapse of judgment,' he said.

Dr Talibi, of Tamworth, Staffordshire, appeared before Birmingham magistrates in January 2017 over driving offences and he admits making an audio recording of proceedings without permission.

But he claimed he'd made the recording 'unintentionally' and 'in a panic' after he'd challenged a fix penalty notice.

The tribunal, due to last until December, continues.
