Abedi could not be given a whole-life sentence, according to the judge and prosecutors, as Labour era legislation which the Conservatives have not changed prohibits such sentences for convicts under the age of 21 at the time of their crimes, and Abedi was a few months shy of his 21st birthday when the Manchester bombing took place.
Abedi’s crime is not only mass murder; it is a war crime, which is very different in character and motivation. He and others like him are jihadis who are waging war against Western countries. Yet little or nothing is being done to counter the Salafi doctrine that motivated him. Officials consider it “Islamophobic” to note the obvious fact that hatred of disbelievers and war against them is a normative Islamic tenet. The infamous Islamic State caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was “the son of a pious Sunni family from the Iraqi district of Samarra”; he “parlayed religious fervor, hatred of nonbelievers,” which is found abundantly in the Hadith as well as in the Quran. While not every Muslim follows these tenets, enough do to create national security problems in the West, as well as a genocide of Christians in Africa and the Middle East.
“Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi sentenced to minimum of 55 years in jail,” ITV News, August 20, 2020:
Hashem Abedi has been sentenced to a minimum of 55 years in jail for the murder of 22 people in the Manchester Arena bombing.
Abedi refused to attend the courtroom to face his verdict, as judge, Mr Justice Jeremy Baker, handed him 24 life sentences for organising the Manchester Arena bomb plot – adding he “may never be released.”
The 23-year-old who was born and raised in Manchester, was accused of showing “contempt” to the families of those he and his suicide bomber brother Salman Abedi killed more than three years earlier by not coming into the dock.
Sentencing him on Thursday afternoon, the judge said: “Although Salman Abedi was directly responsible, it was clear the defendant took an integral part in the planning.”
The judge added: “The motivation for them was to advance the ideology of Islamism, a matter distinct to and abhorrent to the vast majority for those who follow the Islamic faith.
“The defendant and his brother were equally culpable for the deaths and injuries caused.
“The stark reality is that these were atrocious crimes, large in their scale, deadly in their intent, and appalling in their consequences….
