Hong Kong will woo British doctors to work at SAR hospitals in a campaign scheduled for Sunday in London.
Hospital Authority chief executive Tony Ko Pat-sing will speak at an event organized by the Hong Kong Medical Society of the United Kingdom the day before to explain the details on how overseas doctors could practice in Hong Kong hospitals.
UK medical students, interns, trainees, and specialists are welcome to join both on-site and online recruitment seminars.
Some may even be offered jobs on the spot.
According to the recruitment poster on Facebook, the authority is offering annual salaries ranging between 92,772 (HK$890,650) and 188,088, plus 25 days of annual leave.
The event at Euston Square will be attended by Ko, current doctors, University of Hong Kong scholar Ivan Hung Fan-ngai and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London director general Gilford Law Sun-on.
During the luncheon talks, Hong Kong's medical registration amendment bill and tips for overseas-trained doctors on preparing for the medical licensing exam in Hong Kong will be discussed.
A third-year med student, Trevor, told The Standard he is forced to skip the event as he is flying back to Hong Kong for the Easter break, but he is happy there are now such pathways.
"Many Hongkongers studying medicine in UK schools were born and raised in Hong Kong, and our families and friends are still [in Hong Kong]," he said.
"I think it's good that they're offering pathways for us to practice back home."
Hong Kong Patients' Voice chairman Alex Lam Chi-yau said doctors can gain valuable experience working in Hong Kong's public health-care system.
"Working conditions in public hospitals may be relatively poor, as there may be more cases to handle. However, there is also an advantage to it, as they will have more opportunities to gain experience," Lam said.
The authority plans to visit other countries, including Australia, for similar campaigns, chairman Henry Fan Hung-ling said.
