General Stanley A. McChrystal is the United States’ Commander for International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Commander for U.S. Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A). General McChrystal formerly served as the Director of Joint Staff from 2008 to 2009.
Moreover, McChrystal was a Commander of Joint Special Operations Command in the year 2003 to 2008,b where he garnered appraisal for the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda in Iraq. However, McChrystal also received various criticisms for his alleged participation in covering up the Pat Tillman friendly fire incident.
One of the main reason for having his current appointment is the McChrystal has the reputation for thinking and saying what other military officials and leaders are frightened to, which he presumed on June 15, 2009. This was followed by some negative remarks towards the vice president of U.S and other administration officials.
And recently, according to Joe Klein of Time Magazine, one of America’s top commander’s in Afghanistan, General McChrystal, submitted his resignation.
The said resignation comes after McChrystals irresponsible remarks were made together with his staff during a Rolling Stone interview. This story about McChrystal’s unflattering remarks towards top civilian authorities, which includes Vice President Joe Biden, will appear on Friday’s edition of Rolling Stone that was written by Michael Hastings.
U.S. President Obama immediately summoned McChrystal to the White House after the news has reached into his knowledge when the said interview was publicized. According to Obama, McChrystal showed “poor judgment,” but he still wants to talk to the general “directly” tomorrow before the president decides to McChrystal’s providence.
And as of earlier today, McChrystal apologized stating that the said article was a “mistake” that reflects a poor judgement.
According to the general, throughout in his entire career, he has lived by the values of personal honor and professional integrity. He even added that what was imposed in the article falls far short of that standard. McChrystal even said that he has high respect and admiration for the current U.S. President and its national security team.
And as for McChrystal’s reported resignation, USA Today clarifies:
“It’s standard for officials at his level to offer their resignation at times like this,” reminding us that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld tendered his resignation several times during the Bush administration, such as when the Abu Ghraib prison abuse became public. Former President Bush did not accept it until the 2006 midterm elections.
“So we could have a situation in which the resignation is there, and it’s up to Obama to take it or not.”
This only proves that McChrystal himself to be disreputable, and not worthy for the Presidant’s trust. General McChrystal is obviously blameworthy for commtting insubordination and disrespect. According to some people, McChrystal should undergo on a court martial for doing such behavior.
