Package deal: sex videos and computer viruses
About 100,000 computer users got more than they bargained for when they downloaded the sex videos and pictures of famous Chinese model Zhai Ling.
The images were packaged with over 1,000 types of computer viruses.
Experts believe hackers slipped the viruses in among the three sexually explicit videos of the 23-year-old model, nicknamed Shoushou (the beast).
The movies of the model, who works for the New Silk Road Model Company in Beijing, were uploaded to the Internet in late February, allegedly by an angry ex-boyfriend.
They have received widespread publicity.
Shi Xiaohong, a security expert with the 360 Security Center said some viruses were capable of doing serious damage to computers.
Users' information, accounts and codes could be stolen, Shi said, adding that viruses could also use the infected computer's IP address to perform illegal acts, even committing crimes online.
In addition to the Zhai Ling videos, movies featuring two other women are also hot items on the Internet at the moment. They too have viruses packaged with them, said Tang Wei, an anti-virus engineer with Beijing Rising International Software Co Ltd.
"Because those videos did not get as much attention as Zhai Ling's, the viruses they contain have had not spread as widely," Tang added.
Tang said hackers zero in on popular videos online to spread damaging viruses.
"Hackers want to enlarge the impact of their virus to get more profits. Hot issues in the society meet some people’s needs, so they choose the hot issues to package their viruses," Tang said.
The experts said the viruses are easily found and dealt with using professional anti-virus software because they are relatively simple.
A man, surnamed Miao, who recently downloaded pictures and videos of Zhai Ling, said he was not deterred by talk of computer viruses.
"I do not worry about the virus because I know how to repair computers and the virus can be killed by anti-virus software," Miao said.
