Two teenagers admit prank in putting cement blocks on railway
2015/09/16 18:21:14

Taipei, Sept. 16 (CNA) Two junior high school students came forward Wednesday to admit that they put cement blocks on a railway line that could have derailed a train in eastern Taiwan.
The driver of the Puyuma-class train, Chan Yu-hsien (詹譽暹), was about to pull into Ji'an Station (吉安) when he saw something ahead on the tracks that reflected the light. He put his brakes on and stopped the train before it hit the cement blocks.
The train, carrying 27 passengers, only continued into the station after the cement blocks and stones had been removed.
The train was delayed for several minutes, but Chan was commended for his vigilance that averted a possible derailment disaster.
The two teenagers told police that they carried the cement blocks, each weighing more than 10 kg, as well as stones from nearby, and arranged them on the rails for fun.
They stayed for a while to watch before running away when they saw the train make an emergency stop.
They only realized how serious their prank was when the incident was reported in the media, whereupon they came forward themselves, accompanied by their parents.
The two, one aged 14 and the other aged 15, were turned over to the authorities in connection with offenses against public safety.
