SINGAPORE - Two men have been arrested for suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.
In the first case, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division were patrolling in the vicinity of Yishun Street 11 on Aug 20, around 11.45pm, when they spotted the suspect behaving suspiciously.
The officers approached the 28-year-old man and found loanshark-related paraphernalia in his possession.
A handphone containing suspected debtors' records, four SIM cards, a can of paint and a marker were found in his possession and were confiscated as case exhibits.
After a brief interview, officers found out that he had committed several cases of loanshark harassment by splashing paint and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls of HDB blocks in Yishun housing estate.
He was subsequently placed under arrest.
In the second case, police received a call from a resident on Aug 21, at around 2.20am, reporting that a man behaving suspiciously was spotted at Hougang Ave 3.
Officers were promptly dispatched to the location and found the 37-year-old suspect in the area.
The suspect immediately tried to escape when he saw the police but was subsequently detained after a brief chase.
He was found with loanshark harassment-related paraphernalia, such as marker pens, cans of paint, plastic bags, paint brushes, gloves, a screw-driver and a handphone believed to contain debtors' records.
Preliminary investigations also revealed that he was involved in loanshark harassment activities such as splashing paint and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls of HDB blocks in Hougang housing estate.
First-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.
