Two GPs charged with failing to adhere to proper procedures
SINGAPORE: Two general practitioners, who were banned from performing liposuction after the death of a patient, were on Wednesday charged with failing to adhere to proper procedures.
38-year-old Wong Meng Hang and 50-year-old Zhu Xiu Chun are accused of breaching the Hospitals and Medical Clinics Act between November 2008 and August 2009.
Wong faces 26 charges, while Zhu is accused of five.
The alleged breaches include failing to allow a seven-day cooling period to patients who underwent liposuction, failing to obtain a post-discharge 3-month feedback of patients, as well as performing liposuction on patients who each had a body mass index of more than 28 at their TLC @ Orchard Clinic.
In 2009, 44-year-old Franklin Heng died after the two doctors performed liposuction on him.
The doctors were then banned from performing the procedure.
A lawsuit was filed and it is understood the two doctors are to compensate Mr Heng's family.
The amount has not been decided.
At that time, the clinic was known as Reves Clinic.
It has since been renamed Yume Aesthetic & Medical Clinic.
At the courts on Wednesday, the clinic was also charged and is accused of 21 counts of allowing Wong and Zhu to perform liposuction on patients without the assistance of a qualified medical professional.
The maximum penalty for the breaches is a two-year jail term and S$20,000 fine on each count. - CNA/gn
