Two fined for falsely declaring info in work pass application

Posted: 29 May 2012 1311 hrs

SINGAPORE: Forty-four-year-old Singaporean Jackson Tan and 31-year-old Singapore Permanent Resident Canares Lualhati Sikat were fined S$5,000 each for falsely declaring information to the Manpower Ministry in a work pass application.

Both accused were also convicted for employing a dependant's pass holder without a valid work pass.

A statement by the Manpower Ministry said investigations revealed that the men, partners of a restaurant, had intended to pay an employment pass holder a monthly salary of only S$1,600.

Manpower Ministry said although they were fully aware of the salary criteria for work pass applications, both men still declared that the basic monthly salary was S$2,500 in the application submitted.

The ministry added that both men also conspired to employ another foreign employee to work in their restaurant as a waiter without a valid work pass from December 10, 2011 to February 7, 2012.

For illegally employing a foreign employee without a valid work pass, both accused pleaded guilty to the charges, which were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Between January and April this year, the Manpower Ministry prosecuted 18 employers for illegal employment/deployment offences.

A total of 14 employers were also prosecuted for false declaration offences.
