TV shows that became blockbusters
It's almost hard to believe, but some of the movies that have excited us most have been and continue to be spin-offs from TV. For 'Downton Abbey,' for example, the move has proved fruitful. The beloved British historical period drama had such a successful spin-off movie in 2019 that it's back with another. At the US premiere of 'Downton Abbey: A New Era' on May 15, Elizabeth McGovern, who plays Cora Crawley, said, “Downton Abbey is just really the gift that keeps on giving. I couldn’t believe we were going to do a second movie because it’s just so hard to do,” reports Vanity Fair. “We’ve been doing it for so long, and to think of an idea that breathes a little bit of new energy without sacrificing everything that everybody loves about it—that is a big ask. But [creator and writer] Julian [Fellowes] really managed to do that. The movie really is funny, and then it packs an emotional punch.” The film is out May 20 and fans can expect a wedding, a birth, a death, a threat to the family bloodline, and a film within a film.
