SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a Turkish man aged 23 and an Iranian woman aged 20 respectively, for their suspected involvement in a case of theft by "sleight of hand."
On Mar 2 at about 10.05pm, a 40-year-old male victim was approached by an unknown couple along Eu Tong Sen Street who requested to see some Chinese currency Reminbi.
The victim took some notes from his wallet to show to them. He also handed RMB100 to one of the suspects, which was promptly returned. All of a sudden, the male suspect snatched the victim's Singapore notes from the victim's wallet with a quick show of hands.
The victim quickly grabbed his money back. Sensing something amiss, he started counting his notes, whereupon the suspects left the scene. A few minutes later, the victim realised that SGD300 was missing from his original stack of 7 pieces of SGD100 notes. Police were then alerted to the case.
Following extensive enquiries and follow-up investigations, officers managed to establish the identities of the suspects. On March 14 at about 11.13 pm, the duo were arrested in the vicinity of Lorong 19 Geylang.
The suspects will be charged in court for the offence of theft with common intention, which carries a maximum jail term of three years imprisonment, or with fine or both.
