Trump says Taiwan should pay for defence, sending TSMC stock down

TAIPEI: Taiwan should pay the US for its defence as it does not give the country anything, US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said, sending shares of Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC down on Wednesday.

I know the people very well, respect them greatly. They did take about 100% of our chip business. I think, Taiwan should pay us for defence, Trump said in interview with Bloomberg Businessweek on June 25 but published on Tuesday.

You know, we’re no different than an insurance company. Taiwan doesn’t give us anything.

TSMC is the dominant maker of advanced chips used in everything from AI applications to smartphones and fighter jets, and analyst believe any conflict over Taiwan would decimate the world economy.

The US is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier, but there is no formal defence agreement. The US is however bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.

Taiwan, which China views as its own territory, has complained of repeated Chinese military activity over the past four years as Beijing seeks to pressure the democratically governed island which rejects China’s sovereignty claims.

US president Joe Biden has upset the Chinese government with comments that appeared to suggest the US would defend Taiwan if it were attacked, a deviation from a long-held US position of strategic ambiguity.

Washington and Taipei have had no official diplomatic or military relationship since 1979, when the US switched recognition to Beijing.

There was no immediate reaction from Taiwan’s government, nor TSMC which is currently in its quiet period ahead of its second quarter earnings report on Thursday.

TSMC shares down

Shares in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker and a major Apple and Nvidia supplier, fell more than 2% on Wednesday morning. The broader market was down around 0.4%.

TSMC is spending billions building new factories overseas, including US$65 billion on three plants in the US state of Arizona, though it says most manufacturing will remain in Taiwan.

Taiwan also has a backlog worth some US$19 billion of arms deliveries from the US, which US officials and politicians have repeatedly pledged to speed up.

Since 2022, Taiwan has complained of delays in deliveries of US weapons such as Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, as manufacturers focused on supplying Ukraine to help it battle invading Russian forces.

In April, the US Congress had passed a sweeping foreign aid package which includes arms support for the island, after House Republican leaders abruptly switched course and allowed a vote on the US$95 billion in mostly military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and US partners in the Indo-Pacific.

China held two days of war games around the island shortly after President Lai Ching-te took office in May, saying it was punishment for his inauguration speech, which Beijing denounced as being full of separatist content.

But China has also been using grey zone warfare against Taiwan, wielding irregular tactics to exhaust a foe by keeping them continually on alert without resorting to open combat. This includes sending balloons over the island and almost daily air force missions into the skies near Taiwan.

China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control. Lai, who says only the Taiwanese people can decide their future, has repeatedly offered talks but been rebuffed.

I agree with Trump, he's being prudent and realistic. The fuckiens had better cough up the money, no more freebies for them.
Taiwanese are parasites. Their military is corrupted cannot be trusted. Eventually, all US weaponry in Taiwan will end up in China when they surrender.

A Taiwanese business associate was a personal driver for them during his conscription days. He said almost every general have affairs, using their army-training or office-hours to rendezvous with their lovers. I told him, pretty much the same for my country's regulars.

It’s a blatant US addiction. Taiwan have no where to buy weapons except US and now they are being extorted. Imagine a guard dog has to pay for weapons to guard your master.

Japanese yen depreciated 80% against New Taiwanese Dollar in the past 12 years.

Taiwan should just buy from Japan.

That's why Trump is good for peace. He'll pull NATO out of Ukraine, force Zelensky and Putin to stop the war, reduce funding for Philippines and Taiwan. All the flashpoints will cool down. He's probably the most isolationist of all the modern presidents - his priority has always been home security, not other countries'. As a businessman he knows you can't just go on supporting militaries everywhere on a mountain of debt.

Except Israel. His hands are tied - Jews are behind the deep state and the major lobbies that support both the Dems and the GOP.

I agree that Taiwan should pay for the defence, but what he means at the back is that US will continue to sell weapons to Taiwan.
Bullet fired at Trump, but Biden got hurt !

TSMC is a part of US now. So does Taiwan indirectly.
All electronics and IC comes from Japan, Korea and Taiwan primarily.
If Taiwan got conquered, US will be a grave danger. If you are the President of the United States, will you allow that to happen ?

What trump can do is to deliver his messages indirectly and leave his deputy to sprout the real message !

This is so wrong. Trump will continue to sell weapons to Taiwan, and making money is just the facade. But he knows that Taiwan has its strategic importance to US and their technology.

He'll continue to sell weapons to Taiwan, true, but he'll make the Taiwanese cough up the money. No free lunch.

More importantly, he'll not agitate for war in the Taiwan Strait like what the Dems are doing, he'll not instigate independence for Taiwan. Taiwan's defence is the priority, not war.

The point of Taiwan now has grown to be very different.
Taiwan has grown to be an important role in World's military now. It's very strategic now.
Taiwan has the world beating TSMC, and they produce the best chip which under chip foundry fail to produce.

It's not now provoking china into war, you like it or not. China's madman like Xi Jinping just want to be the leader of the world going forward. If US is to lose Taiwan and the chip making technology and human resources to China, it will be the end of US and US will surely take a beating economically and most importantly militarily.

Now, the US election is very simple. The more you hate china, the more votes you get.

Fucking Trump is very anti-Chinese, not just China Chinese but every Chinese in this planet. This fucker acts more like a gangster thug, always asking for Protection Money wherever he can. He should have been killed at the assassination attempt instead.

It's not like Taiwan is paying nothing in return. They are already paying for their US weaponry, air crafts, anti-missile systems, etc, thus enriching the US arms suppliers. It's because of the fear of antagonizing China that the US is limiting their sales of more arms to Taiwan.

Also, the 9-dash line region is the route for International Trade. If it were to be fully controlled by China, who will stand to lose? The US will also be amongst those countries that trade with Japan, Korea, Taiwan, as well as selected South East Asian countries (eg: Vietnam, Philippines, etc).

Trump is a racist. He's anti all non-white people. But he's anti-war. He didn't start any war in his term.

He's also a cheapskate, looking for freebies. However, he's in the pocket of the MIC, so he'll continue to sell arms to allies but make them foot a larger part of the bill. He'll continue to arm Japan and Taiwan and the Philippines, but you can be sure he'll try to maintain status quo and not agitate for war.

I still think he's better for peace than the Dems.

This is why all the more that Taiwan cannot be held by China, but Trump doesn't see it this way. To him, everything is only about money, not the future. He's very shortsighted.
