SINGAPORE : The trend of union mergers is expected to continue in Singapore as this will benefit the unions, strengthen their resources and management expertise, said NTUC Secretary General Lim Swee Say.
Speaking at the delegates conference of the Singapore Bank Officers' Association (SBOA), he said the SBOA and the Singapore Bank Employees' Union will be discussing the issue of merger after the SBOA gets the mandate from its delegates.
Once that is done, a pro-tem committee headed by NTUC Assistant Secretary General Ong Ye Kung will look into the details to effect the merger.
Mr Lim believes that once the two banking unions come together, some 10,000 employees will benefit from the move.
Mr Lim said the taxi associations are also looking to merge.
There are currently six such associations.
Talks about the merger have been under discussion over the past few months under the guidance of Mr Seng Han Thong, the advisor to the Taxi Operators' Associations.
Mr Lim believes that such a large association will be able to better look after the retirement and welfare needs of taxi drivers.
Separately, a new union, the Attractions, Resorts and Entertainment Union (AREU), was registered on January 15 this year.
The AREU intends to attract employees from the two integrated resorts whom it believes will provide a large membership base.
