SHAH ALAM - Thieves used an oxy cutter to break into a bank vault and escape with RM176,000 (S$70,100) in cash.
The bank's staff only found out about the incident when the bank, at Kota Damansara, opened for business at 8am yesterday.
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the thieves, believed to be experienced welders and drillers, could have gained access to the bank through a garbage chute at the back of the premises.
"We believe the incident occurred between Saturday and Sunday when the bank was closed for the weekend," he said, adding that security guards were stationed at the bank during the day only.
DCP Tun Hisan said the thieves might have known about the bank's layout.
"We believe the group had monitored the bank and studied its security measures before the heist," he said, adding that the culprits had used an oxy-acetylene metal cutter and heavy duty drill to cut a hole in the bank vault door.
Police are studying the CCTV footage at the bank and did not rule out the possibility of an in-house involvement.
